As I manage to found similar dataset from Europe and USA, we can make a quick comparaison between thier cities.

Once I extracted the data from my Python code, I will then only use Excel because it is easier and faster to use in this case.

  1. General comparison

In the following table I make a general analysis between the global number

The only difference in the dataset was that for young people I couldn’t find a category from 20 to 24 years old but only from 18 to 24 years old fror the US. So comparing the two percentage wouldn’t make sense. What we can do though is make an estimation of the percentage. Because 20 to 24 is one third of 18 to 24, we just take 1/3 away from its percentage of the US which gives us 6.5% which is close and realistic to the percentage of young people in Europe.

The total population in the dataset of the US is higher than the one inthe dataset of Europe even though the total population of Europe is actually higher. In my opinion this wouldn’t affect much the outcome but it is something to keep in mind when looking at the conclusion.

2. City sizes comparison

Lets see the differences where people live depending on city sizes: -small city : less than 150 000 inhabitant -medium city : more than 150 000 and less than 1 000 000 inhabitant -big city : more than 1 000 000 inhabitant

In fact we can note here a big difference.

In the US, the vast majority of people live in big cities. It represent 60% whereas in Europe its only 32%.

In Europe, almost half of the population lives in medium size cities.

3. City categories for young people

Is there any difference for what young people (between 18 to 24 years old for the US and 20 to 24 years old for Europe) choose to live?

We can see that on both side, young people are more represented in medium cities.

4. City categories for elderly people

What are the differences of categories of city people over 65 years old choose to live in both region?

Interestingly, we see that in both places that big cities represent the lowest percentage of people over 65 years old and small cities have the highest percentage of them.

We can conclude that people that take their retirement prefer to live in small city.

Conclusion:

We can see that most of the time Europe and the USA have strong similarities except the fact that the population is more concentrated in big city in the USA than in Europe.

Additionally, I conducted a comparison using a Dashboard, and you can interact with it.
